Mallacoota — activities and attractions

Things to Do in Mallacoota

The honest version — what's actually worth your time.

Mallacoota is one of those places where the to-do list writes itself. Water on three sides, a national park at your back, and a town small enough that you run into the same people at the bakery and the pub. It takes about half a day to feel like a local.

Below is the honest version — what's actually worth your time.

Nature and Wildlife

Gabo Island lighthouse off the Mallacoota coast

Gabo Island

A protected lighthouse reserve 14km offshore, home to one of Australia's largest little penguin colonies and a resident population of fur seals. Boat tours run from Mallacoota Wharf (550m from Silver Bream) through Wilderness Coast Charters — September through May, weather permitting. Spot humpback whales on the journey out.

The island's granite lighthouse, built in 1862, is the second tallest in Australia. Pack layers — it's always a few degrees cooler out there.

Croajingolong National Park wilderness

Croajingolong National Park

One of Australia's 15 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, Croajingolong wraps around Mallacoota with 100km of pristine coastline. Walk the Genoa Peak trail for panoramic views, explore Wingan Inlet through banksia woodland, or pick up the Wilderness Coast Walking Track for anything from an hour to a week.

Keep an eye out for wallabies at dawn, echidnas in the undergrowth, and sea eagles overhead.

Birdwatching

Mallacoota is one of the best birdwatching locations in Victoria. Ground parrots, glossy black cockatoos, azure kingfishers along the inlet. The inlet's edge at dawn is worth setting the alarm for.

Water and Beaches

Pristine Mallacoota beach

Beaches

Bastion Point for sheltered family swims and rock pools. Betka Beach for reliable surf with rarely a crowd. Both are a short drive from town. For something more remote, ask locally about walking tracks to Quarry Beach or take a boat up the inlet to find your own stretch of sand.

Fishing at Mallacoota inlet

Fishing

The Mallacoota Inlet is one of the best fishing spots in Victoria. Bream and flathead year-round, tailor and salmon in summer. Hire a tinny from Mallacoota Hireboats or Barbie Boats, book an offshore charter through Mallacoota Fishing Charters, or drop a line off the main wharf. Grab bait and tackle from the general store in town.

Kayaking and Boating

The estuary at sunrise is something else. Kayak hire is available locally, or explore by tinny at your own pace. The inlet is calm most mornings.

Dining at Scallywags overlooking the inlet

The Bakery

Pies are legendary with locals. Get there early.

One rule: fresh fish and chips on the foreshore as the sun goes down beats almost everything.

Mallacoota Golf Club

Golf

Mallacoota Golf Club runs a relaxed 9-hole course surrounded by bushland. No bookings, no dress code — drop your money in the honesty box by the first tee. Kangaroos on the fairway are par for the course, literally. Clubs available to hire.
